G Dep (Interview)

For several when you mention the name G Dep, many things come up, some good some bad for the last past 6 years. G Dep also known as the ‘Deputy’ has been battling his demons, however threw it all, he has not stopped doing what made him famous in the beginning, which is spitting lyrics that made him a hot commodity to one of the biggest labels and executives in the game. Peep the interview.

Ok, let’s start from the beginning. How did you wind up getting signed to Bad Boy?

I had a demo that I was doing that my man heard. He said that Black Rob heard and liked the demo I put together and wanted to meet me. Me and Black Rob are from the same hood. B.R. called me like two weeks later and said he wanted me to be on the album. Harvey Pierre heard me when I was spittin for B.R. album and when I came out the booth he told me he wanted me to sign to Bad Boy. It was a wrap. Right after that he spoke to my manager and worked it out.

So all this happened within a month?

Basically. As soon as I got on B.R. album, like that day I spoke to Puff on the phone and the next day after that he sent a car to the hood, actually he sent a Bentley to the hood; he wasn’t in a regular car. I met him and that was that.

What area are you from?

Johnson. East side, 115th and Lexington.

Are you still on Bad Boy?

Yeah, I never signed off of the contract. It was one of them things like let me fall back and get some focus…take it from there. Right now, we still talkin a little bit but I don’t really know the situation as far as how we gonna do it…if we’re gonna put another album out under Bad Boy.

Do you want to put another album under Bad Boy?

Yeah, I feel like I didn’t really go all way with it as far as I think I could of went so if I put another album out with Bad Boy, that would be a blessing…keep this shit going.

Now there have been things said on the streets about what happened to you in the past few years. I’d like the official word straight from your mouth about the rumored drug thing and jail stint?

That was one of the problems while I was on Bad Boy. I was doing what I had to do as far as the music but I was in the hood not being responsible. With my actions, I was kind of frivolous doing what I was doing, gettin caught up. I took it there a little further with drugs. That wasn’t acceptable to the label, they wasn’t really feelin that. Personally, that’s something you don’t need to be doing if you want to stay focused and get money. I got caught up with a lot of jail. That comes with the territory. I was running around in places I had no business being, just getting caught up.

When you were going through your trials, did Diddy ever extend an arm to you?

Yeah, Diddy always helped and always told me that if I needed any time away or if I needed any help, holla at him. But he a busy dude so he can’t be holding my hand. He always extended himself with whatever he could do. But there was nothing he could really do; it was something I had to work out myself. At the end of the day, he’s there to put out the music. He’s got business to take care of. If anything, I knew I had to take care of things.

So how is life looking for G Dep?

It’s lookin like I just had to focus a lil more and be true to myself. I’m gonna get whatever I put into it. I’m getting it. Right now, we have the Deponomics goin. Shootin videos. Everything’s positive. I want cats to know that we comin. Don’t get it confused…Deponomics seasons in effect. When Black Rob come home, he get it goin on again.

When is that?

He’ll be home probably another year or so. He might be home a little earlier than that but that’s the last I heard.

The game has changed a lot since you released your last album because of the internet. How do you feel about the whole internet thing? A good thing or bad thing?

Half and half. It’s on the listener. You could always do what you been doing and listen to the radio and buy the albums but if you’re the one getting on the internet complaining about it and then you gonna download, then you’re part of the problem. The internet is not a problem unless you make it one.

Do you feel that you can still be relevant in a genre that really has no respect for the artists that came before?

I think there’s always a time that we need to show the younger dudes how it’s done. It seems like the new cats coming up, maybe cause of the internet and it’s so flooded, don’t really know about the old school cats. I don’t think a lot of them coming up are really educated on Hip Hop. It probably just takes a little drilling in cats heads to let them know that people did pave the way for this. You definitely gotta respect this.

Do you have any advice for new artists coming up?

I think you always have to remember that even though music is the focus, there are a lot of misconceptions about what really goes on. Stay focused, not prove yourself to anybody, but make sure you’re right, live your life but not thinking that you made it because it could all be taken away.
