Dave Barz

\"mail\"1. What made you decide to become a producer?

My love for music in general. I\’ve been playing a few different instruments since I was young so its really been a major part of my life.

2. Who are some of your inspirations as a producer?

Guys like Rza, Havoc, Pete Rock, Dr. Dre. And also a littled rock influence as well. Groups like STP and Pearl Jam.

3. How would you describe your production style? Do you have a signature sound?

I like to look at it as mid 90\’s. Raw, hard Hip Hop. My signature is my drums, all my drums are cutom made by me so no one will ever have my snares or kicks. I don\’t use stock generic sounding drums. That to me is a huge problem with all the up and coming guys. They use 808 snares on sample heavy tracks. It doesn\’t make any sense to do that. Gotta make sure all your sounds mesh well. Alchemist is the only one I can think of that knows how to flip stock drums, on that ASR of his.

4. What\’s your setup like? What do you make your music with?

My main 2 weapons are the original Korg Triton mainly as my controller/drum machine and a Mackie 1604vlz analog mixer for warmth. I hate the sampler in the Korg but I know the whole keyboard inside and out. I also rely on various rack gear for sounds and effects as well as Pro Tools with Waves Diamond and SSL plug ins. The track I did for K. Sparks and Angelous called \’Take It There\’, everyone thinks I sampled them violins and bells, I didn\’t. It\’s funny the reaction I got off that track. Only sample in there was a chick sayin \”you know\”.

5. What do you think about the music being played in videos and on radio nowadays?

It\’s terrible! I don\’t know what I\’d do without You Tube. It\’s pathetic that there are consumers out there that actually accept this trash. Me as a consumer I would never spend a cent towards anything that the masses consider hot. I don\’t even have cable in my apartment or house anymore. I hate the reality TV bullshit. Its like the whole entertainment industry gave up being creative. Disgusting.

6. Who would be your dream artists to work with?

As far as Hip Hop I\’d say Method Man, Mobb Deep and unfortunately I can\’t now but I would of loved to been able to work with Aaliyah. As for other genres, Scott Weiland, Wes Borland, Mary J. Blige and Linkin Park.

7. Let us know about any projects you\’re currently working on.

Well I also rap I have 3 full length albums I\’m releasing in 2009, 50/50 with 3 other producers. \’The Current Problem\’ is a album I\’m doing with Connecticut producer Deanero. \’The Green Tape\’ with Queens producer SKrazey, and the biggest project I\’ve ever worked on to date is a album called \’Port Authority\’ I\’m doing with France native, Kurser. T.C.P. and The Green Tape are finished waiting for the business side to complete and Port Authority I\’m lookin at a summer release. As side from being a artist I\’m currently producing for my label mate K. Sparks and Connecticut artists Raiza Rapz, The Company and Skarr Vega.

8. Is there anything else you\’d like to add that we didn\’t cover?

Yeah, just because you make beats does NOT make you a producer. Working with the artists to make the song going back and forth exchanging ideas and being a lead role into making the record is what makes you a producer. Too many \’\'beat makers\’\’ call themselves producers. That\’s a disgrace to music as a whole. Asides that big shout out to my man HoodGrown and the whole Double Up family, K. Sparks, Kurser, Reicha, Mixtape Assassin, Killa P, J Banks and all the fans that show their support. -100
