This past month, DoSomething.org and VH1 partnered to present the 2010 “Do Something Awards” to honor young people, as well as celebrities for their commitment to social change. As an advocate for uplifting and inspiring inner-city children, Snoop Dogg was awarded with this year’s “Do Something For The Kids” award for his admirable charity football league called, Snoop Youth Football League (SYFL). Check out the video below as Snoop humbly accepts his “Do Something Award.”

Just Plain Ant is back with another fresh collection of his unique brand of hip-hop — beats, jazzy samples and a host of guests who each add their own flavor to the mix. Among the guests we’ve got blocSonic regulars such as Joey Ripps, Ohbliv and Sleaze. We’ve also got some new names — Black Liquid, Braintrust, Mic Jordan, Gordy Michael, NOTE, Octavion Xcellence, Photosynthesizers and last but not least… the INCREDIBLE… Chuck D! That’s right… the legendary Public Enemy front man took time out of his busy schedule to drop a verse!

As you’ll read in Ant’s PDF liner-notes, this album was a long time in the making and has undergone a few changes along the way… but in my opinion, it was worth it… Ant turned out another fantastic release! I hope you’ll enjoy it as much as I do.

Thanks in advance for checking it out! Remember… keep the music moving… share it… blog it… podcast it!

Grab “Rumble, Young Man, Rumble” here.

Remix reminder: If you’d like your remix to possibly be included on the next Just Plain Ant single… be sure to download the first single in FLAC format, remix one of the tracks with the instrumental and/or acapella provided and upload your remix in FLAC, WAV or AIFF format to our SoundCloud DropBox by Friday, August 6th.

Huey is a talented young St. Louis-born artist best known for his debut chart-topping hit “Pop Lock and Drop It,” which was a top 3 single on the Billboard charts and for being featured on “MTV Jams”, appearances on MTV’s “Cribs” a performance on the finale of “America’s Best Dance Crew” and for becoming a staple on BET’s “106 & Park” countdown for almost two straight months. The subsequent remix with T-Pain & Bow Wow only solidified “Pop Lock and Drop It” status as a bonafide smash. Huey’s debut LP, Notebook Paper, (2007 Jive Records) featured production from T-Pain, Mannie Fresh, Jazzy Pha and Stargate and it was a Top 5 Hip-Hop debut on the Billboard charts.

Grounded on the same streets that produced successes among the likes of Nelly, Chingy and the St. Lunatics, Huey’s approach is a refreshing one. “I’m versatile,” he offers matter of factly. “It’s like whatever the beat tells me to do – it could be relaxed on a cool level to where I’m explaining my feelings for a female. It could be me explaining my feelings for money. It could be dancing in the club, crunk in the club. It’s a bunch of everything that’s going to be on this album.”

After experiencing some delays in securing his release from Jive Records, Huey’s sophomore LP, Redemption (release date 9-14-2010), is finally ready for release and the LP’s lead-single, “Smile and Wave,” f/Dorrough is currently available at iTunes and the track was featured on the AOL Music homepage with 30 million plus uniques. The LP’s follow-up single, “I Go Crazy,” f/Colby O’Donis will also impact in the immediate future. Huey’s “Hello To All My Haterz” video premiered on Worldstarhiphop.com in the top slot and has already received millions of views.

Only five years in, Huey has already climbed the rap totem-pole and already speaks like a seasoned veteran. And while outside opinions may sway, he’s clearly been placed in a situation to carry on the musical following of St. Louis – by any means necessary. “Right now, we’re viewed as commercial flat out,” Huey says. “Right now we’re just looked at as a commercial place and it’s not that. We’re not just commercial. It’s gutter in St. Louis and me as a young person, it probably would be hard to believe. That’s why you gotta straight give it to ‘em. It’s a new St. Louis and that’s what I’m about to show err’body.”

“Huey’s ‘Redemption’ is party-feel-good, make-you-want-to-dance music and it’s being released just in time to make the summer hit lists,” said Que Records’ CEO Quayshaun. “I am very excited about this joint venture between my label and OMG Media and our distribution deal with EMI. Huey is next in line to impact the music industry.

Gyptian is currently at the forefront of Reggae music. He gained popularity amongst Reggae fans with his previous releases. His new album Hold You represents his growth as an artist.

Gyptian’s new album “Hold You” releases on July 20. It contains 15 tracks and 2 iTunes exclusive tracks. This album introduces the World to the new era of Sexy Reggae Music. The melodic opening coupled with Gyptian’s gentle vocals on “Prelude (To Be Held)” sets the perfect mood to start off the album. Gyptian dedicates this album to ladies across the globe. Included is the up-tempo and romantic track “Beautiful Lady” from his debut album. This song displayed Gyptian’s potential as the Casanova of Reggae Music and it’s fitting that it was added to Hold You. From “Call Gyptian,” “Where You Belong” and “Rendezvous, Hold You delivers classic Lovers Rock and Dancehall tunes. The smash hit that has been dominating airwaves worldwide and setting the stage for Gyptian to be the next star in Reggae music is the catchy title track “Hold You.” The next single that’s slated to propel him further as a mainstream success is “Nah Let Go.” Gyptian proves that he is a master at creating memorable lyrics. One listen to the track and you will not forget it. Gyptian opens the door to his heart and lets everyone in on this album. “So Much In Love” and “Drive Me Crazy” expresses his passion for the opposite sex and what motivates his life-force. Gyptian is sexiness personified and his muse is the love he has for women. The album closes with the heartfelt dedication track “Selah.” This album places Gyptian into a category of his own and presents the future of Reggae Music.

Born Windel Beneto Edwards on October 25, 1983, Gyptian was raised in the rural King Weston district in the parish of St. Andrew by his Christian mother Pauline and his Rastafarian father, Basil. Neither parent dictated their son’s spiritual path but both encouraged his musical talent; thus Gyptian, who earned his nickname because he often wrapped shirts around his head in the style of an Egyptian pharaoh, sang at his mother’s Sunday morning church services and at the Saturday night dances promoted by his father who owned the Sugar Stone sound system.

Gyptian’s U.S. tour dates

July 16th‐ Charleston SC

Is TuneCore responsible for distributing crap and crowding the lane for serious artists? That is the allegation of Tommy Silverman, and TuneCore CEO Jeff Price couldn’t resist the challenge.

And make no mistake, this got really personal, really fast. “This is the same person that runs/owns New Music Seminar,” Price stated. “I find it a bit odd that Tommy thinks 80 percent of the people he is trying to get money from (by selling them a ticket to his conference) make music that he thinks is ‘crap.’ If this is the case, why take their money?”

Tommy was hardly assigning himself as the arbiter of good taste, though Price attacked on those grounds. “But philosophically, I disagree with the concept that one person, ie Tommy, gets to make the decisions for the rest of us,” Price noted at one point. And later, the attack turned to Tommy Boy the label. “Even more odd, well over 95 percent of the releases on Tommy’s label, Tommy Boy Records, failed.”

Price rifled through a number of other counterarguments, and raised the collective fist of thousands of aspiring artists. Tommy’s reliance on a 10,000-album sales threshold remains a critical sticking point for Price, largely because the album itself is an ageing format. “Yes Tommy, 79,000 releases sold less than 100 copies last year, and to make matters worse, not one of them sold a copy of their release on 8-Track,” Price continued, part of a larger ‘old man’ characterization. The more sober point, without caps and yelling, is that consumers increasingly purchase singles – not albums – making the 10,000-album threshold a questionable bright line.

The biggest enemy for Jeff Price, unfortunately, is Jeff Price, and the vitriolic and enraged tone of this latest response is hardly an aberration. That style tends to decrease the potency of his arguments, though there are some solid points underneath the hysteria.

For example, who cares if thousands of hobbyists are releasing fresh content? And who can really say what constitutes good art, or what should be filtered? “Although the sheer volume of music creation does not make it good, the fact that more people are creating it certainly increases the odds,” Price expressed.

Hey, the free ride is over at Bandcamp, but most seem fine with the change. According to details disclosed Wednesday, the well-regarded direct-to-fan platform is moving towards a revenue-sharing model, good news for those worried about the longer-term sustainability of the company. And, good news for anyone fearing a straight-ahead subscription or advertising approach.

Details please? Starting in August, the company will start charging 15 percent of gross revenues, dropping to 10 percent for those crossing $5,000 in all-time sales. “We’ve based the percentages on what works for the business and what many of you have already told us feels fair, but there’s still plenty of time for more feedback,” announced Bandcamp’s Ethan Diamond. The rest of this month remains gratis, just like old times.

Reactions? Slapping a price tag on anything is difficult, especially if the audience is accustomed to free. But if the first twenty-or-so comments on the announcement page offer any indication, these changes are being embraced. Most deemed the shift as fair, but others were thankful that Bandcamp is implementing a plan for longer-term sustainability. “I’m happy to share revenue if it keeps Bandcamp going, because the service is the best I’ve ever used,” user Jeremiah Pena noted.

Meet RydazNRtist, a trio whose individual talents artistically covers the entire creative spectrum of popular R&B.

In an era where most commercial music sounds somewhat recycled, it is nice to know some groups still have an organic approach. Meet RydazNRtist, a trio whose individual talents artistically covers the entire creative spectrum of popular R&B. As Def Jams/NCredible’s newest signees, RydazNRtist are in a prime position to show the world that creativity and a desire to really connect with the masses are the main ingredients for success.

Since coming together less than a year ago, RydazNRtist singer, Reuben, producer/vocalist Kevin Writer, and a rapper GQ, have already toured the country twice over, first as a part of the 106 & Park tour with acts like Trey Songz and Mario, then as the opening act on Mariah Carey’s 2010 Angels Advocate tour. Just like everything in their short, but successful career as a group, RydazNRtist initial union happened very naturally.

“I was rapping, honing my skills and Reuben and Kev were making music and I would just go and hop on some of their tracks,” says 23 year-old GQ. “We were all hanging out chillin’ and we recorded ‘Sorry Ass Apology’ and that same night that we came up with the name for our group,” says Kevin referring to the group’s first official single whose hilarious video featuring clips of Tiger Woods became an online sensation. “We just kept on recording every day since then.”

Long before July of 2009 when RydazNRtist first officially came together in Los Angeles, brothers Reuben and Gabriel “GQ” Cannon grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina in a family with five boys. As kids, they would sing and dance around the house pretending they were the Jackson 5. “We would put a broomstick into one of our dad’s weights and make our mic stands,” remembers GQ. “We would take turns being in the front and being Michael and standing in the back and being Tito. Since we were young, my dad always had a video camera on us. He always knew that it was going to be something about his boys.”

When the family’s oldest son, Nick Cannon’s career in the entertainment business began to take off, younger brothers Rueben and GQ moved to Los Angeles in 2003 to pursue their own dreams of stardom. Both boys attended Hollywood High School where they performed in various talent shows and excelled at sports. “I definitely went out to California with the mindset of making music, but I also played baseball too,” says 19 year-old Reuben. “I was drafted to a couple of teams but I turned it down to pursue music. I’m a person who goes with feelings, my heart was in music even though every time I drove by a baseball field I’d be like, ‘Oh my goodness!’ But I just loved music.”

After graduating from high school, GQ and Reuben began to develop their individual musical talents—GQ rapped at various venues around L.A. while Reuben perfected his vocal style. In the early summer of 2009, Reuben was introduced to another young singer and producer Kevin Writer who was from Detroit and had a tremendous amount of professional music industry experience working with other rappers, producers and songwriters while attending college in Florida. “We started rehearsing a lot and since we write and produce all of our own music, it was a situation were we felt like we needed to get on the grind and keep pushing,” says Kevin. “So we jumped on the 106 & Park tour and a couple of people started taking notice and Nick really got behind our project.

After seeing their undying commitment to their music and how effortlessly they were able to write, produce and perform their songs, Nick signed RydazNRtist to his imprint, Ncredible, in June of 2009. After the guys returned home from touring the country with the 106 & Park tour, Nick met with Island Def Jam Music Group CEO, L.A. Reid, who signed the group after seeing the video for “Sorry Ass Apology.” The guys then went on to release their first mixtape, Strip Club Music which the followed with the aptly titled sequel, Sunday Music which showcased their thematic and stylistic range.

RydazNRtist started 2010 with a bang, opening up for Mariah Carey on her sold out, nationwide tour. “Mariah is so professional and has been doing it for so long that watching her was like a dream come true,” says GQ. “She was very gracious with us,” adds Kevin. “When we were at certain venues she would see us performing and let us know that she saw the show and that we were doing really great. She has always been a big supporter.”

Now that their latest stint on the road has come to an end, RydazNRtist are busy finishing up their debut album, Soulful Warfare. “Soulful Warfare is basically like what we go through everyday,” says GQ. “It’s kind of like a tug of war. We’re human and we love the Lord with all of our souls but you might find us in a strip club one of these days. It’s kind of having an angel on one shoulder and the devil on the other.” With their debut album completely produced in house by Kevin Writer and Nick Cannon, RydazNRtist first LP is the perfect introduction to the group’s multi-faceted pool of talent.

The sound of the album is definitely R&B soul, but then we also have some really solid pop records,” explains Kevin. “There are songs where Rueben’s hitting the high notes and I’m growling like I’m in church and GQ’s doing his thing. But we also have some really pop R&B records like ‘One Last Time’ which is a ballad that kind of picked up by itself when we were on tour.”

RydazNRtist manage to find the fine balance between writing deep, meaningful records like the universal love song “Unconditional” and the emotionally trying track “Lost,” while also showcasing their lighter side with up-tempo club ready cuts like “Pull Your Sexy Out” and “Cakes” which features rapper Fabolous.

“We bring a realness that you haven’t really seen from R&B groups in decades,” says Kevin who includes Michael Jackson, Boyz II Men, Jodeci and 2Pac amongst the group’s biggest influences . “We’re not trying to set ourselves apart from the people who hear our music,” adds GQ. “We’re trying to say, ‘Yo, we’re just like y’all. Its kind of like a mirror image of our public. We are the people we’re singing to.”

California bred emcee Trek Life is excited to announce the release of his latest album, Everything Changed Nothing. Produced entirely by Oddisee, the album will be released July 27th via Mello Music Group.

The album is the culmination of years of collaboration between Trek and producer Oddisee that began with the remixes of Price I’ve Paid, Trek’s debut LP. Undaunted by the thousands of miles separating them, the pair have crafted yet another example of how a producer and an artist with the right chemistry can maintain a winning streak. “We both knew exactly what we were trying to do from the beginning,” explains Trek. “Oddisee is a producer in every sense of the world. He had a direction and it was my job to manifest it lyrically.” Oddisee’s sonic backdrop invoked a verbal assault from Trek that remains raw, and unapologetic throughout the album as Trek sheds light on the “ugly nature of the world” with his gritty but poignant lyricism.

“So Supreme”, the album’s lead single has generated a powerful buzz. The track was featured on ESPN recently for the network’s coverage of the Stanley Cup and NBA Playoffs. The track was a perfect fit for video clips that thrive on ideas of competition and perseverance; with a hard-hitting beat and aggressive rhymes complimenting the action on screen. In regards to Trek’s original intent of the track, he says, “This song is really just re-establishing my footing as an emcee. Strictly raw rhymes.” Certainly having the lead single of your new album catch the attention of the world’s premier sports broadcasting network is a good early indication of the album’s merit.

The album’s title stems from the emcee’s role as a father. Speaking affectionately of his daughter, Trek says, “I was thinking how much she means to me and how she’s literally everything I ever wanted, but the reality is life, in general, goes on.” The album speaks to the real life of nearly everyone. The personal struggles, trials and tribulations quite simply don’t act as roadblocks to the freight train that is life. It’s a sobering fact that Trek seems to have a good handle on. On tracks like “So LA” and the soul-scorching “Jump Out There” Trek makes clear his reality-to-fantasy ratio is stacked well in favor of the former. Gritty tracks of urban reality cross-pollinate with songs that deal with romantic desire such as the Bootsy Collins inspired “I’d Rather Be”.

Much as rock groups had classic line-ups lending to their defining sound, many of hip-hop’s classic recordings were a result of the pairing of producers and emcees that simply shared an undeniable chemistry. From the legendary DJ Premier and GURU of Gangstarr to Pete Rock and CL Smooth, duos with a history of building towards developing a distinct sound have often won out in the long run. Oddisee and Trek Life carry on the tradition of keeping a close-knit group dynamic together resulting in the production of a coherent and consistent effort.

Trek Life’s Everything Changed Nothing, produced entirely by Oddisee, drops July 27th via Mello Music group.

Who says the major label machine is dead? When it comes to the top-grossing, blockbuster artists, over-the-top marketing is quite alright, thank you very much. And over at Interscope, the action on Eminem is fierce: just moments after crossing one million units on Recovery, a second track is already over-performing.

The lead single “Not Afraid” is still making waves, but another song is proving just as potent. “Love the Way You Lie feat. Rihanna” has been grabbing number 1 and 2 spots on iTunes since late June, and according to BigChampagne, the song is climbing aggressively across a number of different platforms. “The song has really found its own groove,” Interscope Geffen A&M chief marketing officer Chris Stephenson told Digital Music News.

That includes traditional radio. According to Mediabase spin tracking, “Love” is currently at 14 across the US, part of a steady increase since mid-June. Weekly spins are ramping past 8,000, a gain of more than 2,500 since July 4th.

This is another serious one, mixing classic Eminem vitriol with a sweeter topping of Rihanna. Blend an emotional melody and chord progression into the mix, and another contender is born. Elsewhere, other over-performers include Napster subscription downloads, where the song is also number 1. And, across file-swapping networks, “Love the Way You Lie” is just breaking into the top 10, also according to BigChampagne’s BC Dash.

And the video? Not here yet, according to Stephenson, though of course, unofficial versions are already floating around YouTube. And to no surprise, UMG is blocking at least one of them.

Is $2 million a reasonable annual take-home for the head of the RIAA? And, is it also reasonable for more than ten staffers and executives to be making between $200,000 and $1.33 million? “Absolutely,” according to RIAA senior vice president of Communications Jonathan Lamy, himself earning nearly $299,000 in year-2008. “Look at what top trade association chiefs in DC make,” Lamy told Digital Music News. “The market for the select few folks who have the political and leadership qualities to lead high profile organizations. That’s the barometer.”

Lamy also noted that Bainwol’s salary is now closer to $1.5 million, making 2008 a bulge year. Additionally, the executive pointed to recent staffing cuts, though it remains unclear if that justifies the top-heavy payouts. “We are half the size we used to be,” Lamy continued. Indeed, labels have put pressure on the RIAA, IFPI, BPI, and others to compress or merge over recent years.

But wait, there’s more. Dig a bit deeper into the year-2008 IRS filings, and some hefty payouts to outside law firms also surface. That includes Holme Roberts & Owen LLC, which pursed $9.4 million that year, and Jenner & Block, which billed $7.1 million. Those firms were most likely handling chores like John Doe lawsuits and court cases involving accused swappers.

13-year-old Keychand Matthews (pronounced /key-shawn/) is the hot, new artist out of Orlando hitting the scene heavy with some blazing R&B/Hip Hop tracks that will keep your body moving. Originally from the music-induced scene of Miami, Keychand knew from a very young age that music was his passion.

From the tender age of three, Keychand had an ear for music. He could listen to a song once and hear the subtle nuances of every note.

As a teenager, Keychand enjoys playing the drums, trombone and most recently the keyboard. He possesses an intense fascination for marching bands and draws from this assorted musical background when creating his songs.

Keychand pulls inspiration from old and new school greats alike, including: Usher, The Dream and Ne-Yo along with Michael Jackson and Earth, Wind and Fire. When listening to his music, one can hear the pulsating beats of new-school Hip-Hop blending effortlessly with the melodic undertones of old-school R&B. “I like to mix the different styles of music together,” says Keychand. “I want to introduce my generation to the greats from back in the day.”

When Keychand is not recording or performing, he enjoys being an all-American teenager with activities like football, basketball, swimming and riding his dirt bike. “I love music,” says Keychand. “I also like just chillin’ with my friends and doing regular stuff.”

Along with singing and rapping, Keychand also models, dances and acts. Of all his talents, the multi-faceted teenager finds most joy in music.

His new single, Superstar, will soon be lighting up the charts and Keychand is ready for all the success.

“I can’t wait to have fans and travel to meet them, says Keychand. “I know it’s going to be big.” Keep your ears open for Keychand, this generation’s link to old-school flavor with a new-school twist.

Chicago IL/ Madison Wisconin’s own Romey, aka The Midwest King has done something alot of established artists can’t even do. His hit single ‘Don’t Behave’ featuring up and coming R&B singer J Stills, has been on the billboard charts for 6 weeks straight. All of sale, all with no help from a major, all independant. Romey’s grind is unmatched, touring the midwest area in his wrapped vehicle and expanding his network is what has taken him from ‘an’ to ‘not just any’ artist. Armed with a new mixtape dropping in July called ‘I am King’ presented by Coast 2 Coast Mixtapes, Romey is out to prove to the world that being indie is all it’s cracked up to be.

Hey Romey, thanks for taking the time to sit with me. How you doing?

No prob it’s truly a blessing to be interviewed about my music. I’m doing great in light of the circumstances surrounding me my peoples getting locked up left and right, a lot death from close family and friends but despite all of that my career, musically has never been better.

How does “I Am King” compare to your previous projects?

I honestly can’t compare it to previous projects because the Romey you hear on records or interviews now is so much more polished than the younger Ro. I mean everything from track selection musical arrangement mixing & engineering is so much more advanced its almost unfair because the projects before never had this type of platform. Lyrically, I feel like each mixtape has always been consistently good. I feel like the machine I have set in place behind this one (the fact that this is the first record with all original material and the success of my first single “Don’t Behave”) make this one the biggest project. I will never say one song or album is better than another. I let my close peers and fans choose favorites but I love all my work the same, they are like my children some songs may get more attention than others but they are family and they come together to make great bodies of work collectively.

I hear you have a branding deal with Makaveli Branded clothing, sweet! How did that collaboration happen?

My manager at the time Rick Edwards, recognized my talent back in ’05, he flew out to Chicago to do a photo shoot with Twista for Makaveli Branded and a mutual friend set up a sit down at Ricks hotel I took him to Mac Arthurs to eat we hit the circle on the Westside just looking at cars and girls then we went to the Wild 100’s where I’m from on the south side all the while we were listening to my music he thought it was incredible and the partnership was cemented. Him being VP of Marketing at MB he felt my music as well as what I stand for as a person would be good to represent Tupac and the rest of the company fell in love with the movement and the rest is pretty much history. Shout to Roccett too, we both have been representing the Tupac brand for years and we both take that blessing as a responsibility and tremendous honor.

What producers and artist do you have on the mix tape”?

I kept all the features really close knit for the most part. My in-house producer Unit-7 did 80 percent of the project my man DJ Pain 1 contributed three Reign day productions, Young Boyz, and Music Tech all delivered bangers too. Rap wise we got my artist B-Ezee Unit-7 and Boo Veli sparring with me throughout then J. Stills Devante and Project 718 adding those memorable hooks and choruses just make it such a versatile and well rounded album. The team effort from everybody I mentioned makes this project special cause it’s nothing like making beautiful music with people you genuinely care for.

Your whip is crazy! What made you get your truck wrapped?

I was preparing my first official tour and thought to myself what can I do to make this journey even more monumental so I took Optimus Prime lol that my trucks nickname hit my graphic design guy with my concept and a week later the Romey mobile was born. It was the ultimate investment because everyday I’m branding my name label and album simultaneously.

Is that strictly the tour vehicle, what’s the reaction you get from the public?

I always got the superstar treatment even when I was on the block I stayed in the flyest of whips but now that people see the music taking off and the movement growing the response has been amazing. I see people take pictures of it while driving on the highway little kids always run up to the truck for autographs this whole grind is just I don’t have a word to describe it.

Your coming from a place not too well known for Hip-Hop, how do you plan on marking your territory?

I’m just touring my region and planting the Get Rich flag where ever I go it makes me feel good to come from Chicago then move to Madison Wisconsin as a teen. When I seen Lebron become MVP and come little bitty Akron Ohio it really inspired me to do the same with hip hop. Just know I plan on continually using my talent to grow throughout my territory and beyond.

What’s next on the list for The “Mid-West King”?

ummmm lets see.lol but nah I just plan on staying busy and working hard and remaining humble as I climb this success ladder and if Grammy’s and platinum plaques come with that then expect all of the above from the Midwest King baby.

Where can we find you online?

www.iamromey.com, www.myspace.com/getrichrecords, www.youtube.com, www.twitter.com/romeymdwestking

Any shout outs?

Big Shout out to Hood Grown for taking time with a real hood grown hustler such as myself. Then I just wanna shout out Get Rich Records G’s & R’s all day every day my staff and personnel is the reason I’ve made it this far real talk.
