First off, I’m not a writer so this article won’t be as eloquently written as some of the others on this site. With that out of the way, let me start by stating that I run a music based blog and I also work at a venue that books a lot of independent musicians so I receive a ton of submissions all of the time for a variety of sources. My list below is an account of a few things that really irk me and that fact that hired, professional Public Relations and Management companies are making these mistakes as much as lone artists are.
‘Guest-Blogs’
Many unsigned artists do not know the difference between a beat maker and a producer. While some artists who may not have lots of experience working in multi-million dollar studios, the sound that an artist needs to attract major followers and gain a buzz from record labels is essential when recording music.
A&Rs better known as the gatekeepers of the music industry, or the “middleman” between an artist and the record label are almost obsolete! In a world filled with savvy musicians who push their own music on the streets and have found a way to interest labels by gaining their own fan base, the need for A&R’s have diminished. Now when we say “DOA” I’m referring to A&R’s whose primary job is to scout talent.
Have you ever seen a commercial, a movie or even a magazine where a black couple is displayed? The first thought that comes to mind is probably something to the effect of “Well at least there’s a black couple shown, period.” You’re satisfied with the mere acknowledgement of a black couple but the majority of these portrayals consist of a “darker skinned brotha” and a “fair skinned sista”. It’s common knowledge that images garnered from television and other media outlet have significant influences on children’s minds. It could be argued that the first visages of “the” ideal relationship in the mind of a child is shaped by said images.
